Brian Penkrot is an American composer. He lives in Chicago, teaching composition and theory at Northern Illinois University.

Brian’s aesthetic philosophy concerns perspective and change. His works stem from both mythical origin stories and scientific notions of reality, allowing him to explore the dividing lines between melody, harmony, sound mass, and chaos. Through constant recontextualization, Brian’s music ebbs and flows between traditional ideas of music and noise, challenging the definitions of both.

Brian's music has been performed at festivals and institutions in the US, Europe, and Asia. He has attended numerous festivals and conferences, including June in Buffalo, soundSCAPE, and N.E.O.N. Ensembles including the International Contemporary Ensemble, JACK Quartet, and ECCE have performed his works. He was also awarded a grant in 2014 to study the sketches of Gerard Grisey at the Paul Sacher Stiftung in Basel, Switzerland.

Brian received his PhD from the University of Iowa, where he was the president of the Society for Composers chapter. He received his MM from the University of Nevada and BM from Columbia College. More information, video samples, and audio samples can be found at brianpenkrot.com.
